How this cat personality quiz works

Answer 10 quick, everyday questions about how you react to visitors, surprises, plans and your favorite spot on the couch. Each answer leans toward one of five playful cat personalities: skittish, outgoing, dominant, spontaneous and friendly. Your result is the personality you picked most often.

It takes about a minute, there is no sign-up, and your answers are scored right in your browser. Once you have a result, you can share it or send the quiz to a friend and see which cat they turn out to be. There are no trick questions, so go with your first instinct rather than the answer you think sounds best.

Where the five cat personalities come from

The labels in this quiz are borrowed from real research on how cats differ from one another. Researchers who studied pet cats described personality along five broad dimensions, often nicknamed the “Feline Five,” which roughly cover nervousness, curiosity, bossiness, impulsiveness and friendliness. If you’d like the actual science, our guide to cat personality types explains what those studies found and what they mean for cat owners.

An honest note

This quiz is just for fun. It uses those cat traits as lighthearted metaphors for human habits, so it is not a psychological test and it can’t tell you anything clinical about yourself. Most people are a mix of several types, and your answers might change depending on your week. Treat your result as a smile and a conversation starter, not a label.

What to do with your result

  • Share it with your friends and ask which cat they would have guessed for you. The gap between the two answers is often the funniest part.
